Headword: Θαλπόμενοι
Adler number: theta,26
Translated headword: being mollified, softened
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning they] being deceived.[1]
Josephus [writes]: "[that if] they were being mollified by hope of pardon, if they should be subdued, they had forgotten their own audacious deeds [...]."[2]
Greek Original:
Θαλπόμενοι: ἐξαπατώμενοι. Ἰώσηπος: τοὺς δὲ ὑποθαλπομένους ἐλπίδι συγγνώμης, εἰ παρακρατηθεῖεν, ἐπιλελῆσθαι τῶν ἰδίων τολμημάτων.
Notes:
[1] Again under theta 33. The headword is present middle/passive participle, masculine nominative plural, of θάλπω (theta 27). It must be quoted from somewhere (other than the quotation given, apparently, though see next note).
[2] Josephus, Jewish War 4.221 (a speech in indirect discourse: web address 1). It is here, wrongly, quoted with the compound ὑποθαλπομένους ; read θαλπομένους .
