Headword: *thmelh/santes
Adler number: tau,504
Translated headword: having looked after
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning they] having suppressed.[1]
Greek Original:
*thmelh/santes: qli/yantes.
Notes:
The headword is the aorist active participle, masculine nominative (and vocative) plural, from the verb thmele/w, I look after, take care of; cf. alpha 3450 (gloss), tau 503, tau 505, tau 506, and see generally LSJ s.v. It must be extracted from somewhere, very probably from its only independent attestation: Josephus, Jewish Antiquities 2.79 (web address 1); the Pharaoh's servants, having looked after (i.e. detained -- or maybe having cleaned him up) Joseph, bring him as ordered before the king.
[1] The gloss is the same form as the headword, but from the verb qli/bw (I squeeze, pinch, exercise pressure, compress, oppress, suppress, (metaphorically) retain in custody); cf. iota 585 (gloss) and see generally LSJ s.v. The headword is identically glossed by Phrynichus, Praeparatio sophistica fr. 359.1, Photius' Lexicon, Lexica Segueriana 387.4, and the Synagoge; cf. Hesychius s.v. thmelh=sai.
