Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] more boastful, more excellent. "[He] wrote letters more lofty than Capaneus [sc. would have written], [when he was] puffed-up or deflated or even cajoled,[2] because of which I often call the god to mind, and I cry out that [verse] 'Io Nemesis and deep-roaring thunderbolts'."[3]
And elsewhere: "you think lofty thoughts, and you travel on the heights" -- that is, you were going prancing on tip-toe -- "when being nothing you stood up for this nothing, and you swore that we came neither as generals nor admirals of the Achaeans."[4]
The headword, presumably extracted from the first quotation given, is feminine accusative plural of the comparative of ὑψηλός : cf. upsilon 748.
[2] For the participle κεπφωθείς see kappa 1348.
[3] Adler notes that Jonathan Toup (1713-1785) attributed this passage -- quoted with variations at epsilon 1062, q.v. for Capaneus -- to Synesius or the emperor Julian. The writer quotes Euripides, Phoenician Women 182 (cf. iota 454, nu 162).
