Aristophanes [says this].[1] Either because of the fortification of Peiraeus;[2] or because Themistocles left behind a reputation for wisdom, having interpreted for the Athenians the oracle they had been given: 'farseeing Zeus gives a wooden wall to Athena'. Others were saying other things, but Themistocles declared that 'wooden wall' meant the triremes.[3]
