Headword: *na/kos
Adler number: nu,21
Translated headword: fleece
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] a hairy skin, or a sheep's pelt.[1]
Properly the skin of the goat. Also [sc. attested is] kw/|dion[2] and kw=os. But kw=as [is] the [skin] of the sheep.[3]
Josephus [writes]: "[he] having ordered those entering, to creep for the most part and to cover their backs with fleeces, so that if anyone saw them at night, they might present an appearance of dogs".[4]
The dative [is] na/kei.
The analogy [sc. runs as follows]: as bla/bh ["harm"], bla/bos; di/ya ["thirst"], di/yos; na/ph ["glen"], na/pos; so na/kh ["fleece"], na/kos. But just as, they say, [feminine] a)h/th ["gale"], and masculine a)h/ths, [genitive] a)h/tou; and [feminine] a)ra/xnh ["spider"], [but also the masculine form] a)ra/xnhs, [genitive] a)ra/xnou,[5] so too [one finds] [feminine] na/kh [and also masculine] na/kos, [genitive] na/kou. So [the word is attested] in three ways: [masculine] o( na/kos, [feminine] h( na/kh, [neuter] to\ na/kos.
