The first corps [formed] out of the lochagoi,[1] which is arranged in a single straight line extending from wing to wing. This is also called a prosopon ["face"] and a metopon ["forehead"] and a stoma ["mouth"] and a parataxis ["marshalling"] and a protolochia ["file-head"] and [the] protostatai ["front-line men"]. The line behind this, positioned in parallel, is called the second rank, and the third the third rank; and so on likewise.

Μῆκος φάλαγγος: τὸ πρῶτον ἐκ τῶν λοχαγῶν σύνταγμα, ὃ ὑπὸ μίαν εὐθεῖαν τάσσεται, ἀπὸ κέρατος εἰς κέρας διατεῖνον. καλεῖται δὲ τοῦτο καὶ πρόσωπον καὶ μέτωπον καὶ στόμα καὶ παράταξις καὶ πρωτολοχία καὶ πρωτοστάται. ὁ δὲ κατόπιν τούτου στίχος παράλληλος κείμενος δεύτερον ζυγὸν καλεῖται, καὶ ὁ τρίτος τρίτον ζυγόν: καὶ ἑξῆς ὁμοίως.
