Headword: *kataigi/sas
Adler number: kappa,891
Translated headword: having stormed upon (?)
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning someone] having split apart.[1] For those who have dedicated [something?]to the gods split [it] apart, lest anyone take [it].[2]
Greek Original:
*kataigi/sas: katasxi/sas. oi( ga\r a)natiqe/ntes toi=s qeoi=s katasxi/zousin, i(/na mh/ tis a)/rh|.
Notes:
[1] The headword as transmitted is aorist active participle, masculine nominative singular, of the verb kataigi/zw (kappa 889). It must be quoted from somewhere -- perhaps a fragment of Alexis the comic poet reported by Athenaeus, Deipnosophists 8.338D-E (8.21 Kaibel), where the fish-loving Phayllos storms into the market to make his purchases. The glossing verb katasxi/zw therefore seems inappropriate. But since it occurs in the quotation which follows, perhaps the correct gloss had been lost (already by the time of Hesychius: see next note).
[2] The corresponding entry in Photius, Lexicon kappa262, has ti/ "something" after the participle. More radically, Hesychius s.v. (kappa1123) reads oi( ga\r a)natiqe/ntes i(ma/tia katasxi/zousin au)ta/, i(/na mh\ a)rqw=si para/ tinwn, "for those who have dedicated garments split them, lest they be taken by anyone". Also, Latte there questions the transmitted headword kataigi/sas and conjectures katerei/cas. Theodoridis on Photius considers that this may be correct, and cites parallels including Herodotus 3.66.1; however [DW] this usage seems to be middle voice, not active (see LSJ).
