This sentence, of unknown source, has already been given, in slightly different word order, under the phrase for "being unable" at alpha 537.
The concept of tossing dice (always in the singular 'die') as a metaphor for risking battle or war is familiar to us from Julius Caesar's use at the Rubicon (see alpha 2310, epsilon 3013), but was also used by Polybius and Plutarch (of Pyrrhus); cf. kappa 2591 and phi 5 (end).
