Adler number: kappa,2183
Translated headword: Kouretes' mouth
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. A proverbial phrase used] because people thought they were seers. But others [sc. say it means] a mouth singing oracles.
Greek Original:
*kourh/twn sto/ma: e)do/koun ga\r ou(=toi ma/nteis ei)=nai. oi( de\ qespiw|do\n sto/ma.
Notes:
Such a proverb is cited in Zenobius 4.61, Diogenianus (Mazarin ms.) 5.60, and Apostolius 9.95, as well as in Hesychius kappa3848.
The present gloss is from Zenobius, though oi(=on "as in" appears there instead of oi( de\ "and others"; Hesychius uses the same gloss, but drops the connective.
The saying is listed in the Tragica Adespota, as fr.580. Apostolius seeks to explain this by attributing augury to Cretans, but the reference is more plausibly to the Kouretes as divinities.
