Adler number: eta,240
Translated headword: sun-depriving helmet
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A shade-creating, wide-felted helmet, covering [sc. the head] and taking away [sc. exposure to] the sun. [It is] "Thessalian", because the Thessalian felts [or: caps] were exceptional.

*(hliosterh\s kunh=: skiastikh/, platu/pilos kunh=, kalu/ptousa kai\ a)fairoume/nh th\n h(li/wsin. *qessali\s de/, dio/ti perissoi\ h)=san oi( *qessalikoi\ pi=loi.
Notes:
From a scholion on this phrase (and the gloss "Thessalian") in Sophocles, Oedipus at Colonus 313-14. Most modern editions accept the adjective "sun-depriving", though emendations have been suggested: h(liostegh/s (Coraes) and h(lioskeph/s (Nauck).
