Headword: *)epe/klusen
Adler number: epsilon,2040
Translated headword: washed over
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] cleansed.[1]
Or meaning [he/she/it] flowed over.
"Such and so many evils washed over [them] that it was gold to them and a kind of red-letter day[2] that the barbarians had prevailed."[3]
Greek Original:
*)epe/klusen: e)kaqe/risen. h)\ a)nti\ tou= e)pe/rreusen. toiau=ta kai\ tosau=ta e)pe/kluse kaka/, w(/ste xruso\s h)=n au)toi=s kai\ leukh/ tis h(me/ra krath=sai tou\s barba/rous.
Notes:
[1] = Synagoge epsilon606 and Photius epsilon1410, which have e)kaqa/risen as the gloss rather than the e)kaqe/risen found here (and in one ms. of the Synagoge). The latter is a form of kaqeri/zw, a rare variant for kaqari/zw, which is itself of late Greek alternative for kaqai/rw. For the headword verb e)piklu/zw see also epsilon 2395. Its form here -- third person singular, aorist indicative active (matched by the gloss) -- must be quoted from somewhere (not necessarily the passage given later in the entry; there are numerous other possibilities).
[2] On the idiomatic expression leukh\ h(me/ra (lit. 'white day'), see lambda 322, lambda 323, tau 868.
