Headword: *drupolei=n
Adler number: delta,1550
Translated headword: to go around (with) trees
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
The [verb that means] to besiege with timbers.
Greek Original:
*drupolei=n: to\ cu/lois poliorkei=n.
Note:
The headword verb is unattested outside lexicographers (et al.), who were unsure of its meaning. Photius and ps.-Zonaras give the same gloss as here, but Hesychius delta2441 glosses the third-person singular indicative drupolei= (presumably quoted from somewhere) in three different ways: talaipwrei= ("is in a miserable state"; cf. tau 49), o)reibatei= ("walks on mountains"; cf. omicron 544), and puri\ poliorkei= ("besieges with fire"). See also Eustathius' Commentary on the Odyssey (2.30.1): to\ cu/lois a(plw=s poliorkei=n h)\ to\ kakohqi/zesqai "simply to besiege with timbers, or to behave maliciously (?)".
