Headword: *dafoino/n
Adler number: delta,101
Translated headword: blood-red
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] that which is totally crimson.[1]
"Damis established this marker of his perished steadfast horse, since blood-red Ares struck his chest."[2]
Greek Original:
*dafoino/n: to\ pa/nu foini/sson. sa=ma to/de fqime/nou menedi/ou ei)/sato *da/mis i(/ppou, e)pei\ ste/rnon tou=de dafoino\s *)/arhs tu/ye.
Notes:
[1] The headword is neuter nominative/accusative singular of this adjective. It must be quoted from somewhere (other than the epigram given, which has the masculine nominative singular); probably Homer, Iliad 10.23.
[2] Greek Anthology 7.208.1-3 (Anyte), here carelessly quoted; mu 597 does better in some respects, worse in others. See a further extract from this epigram at tau 38. Gow and Page (vol. I, 37) read mna=ma, the Doric and Aeolic form of mnh=ma (monument), instead of the Suda's sa=ma (marker). Here the Suda follows the Anthologia Planudea in transmitting dafoino/s, the nominative form of the headword. But Gow and Page (ibid. and vol. II, 95-96) suggest reading dafoino/n, the accusative, so that it refers to the horse's skin color and not to Ares. They concede, however, that either alternative could be correct (ibid.).
