Headword: *)ake/raion
Adler number: alpha,835
Translated headword: uncorrupted
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
From the writing of Marcus Antoninus: "even if you are going to live three thousand years and as many tens of thousands, remember nevertheless that no one loses a life other than the one that he lives, or lives one other than the one that he loses. Thus the longest is made equal to the shortest. For the present moment is equal for all, and that which is being destroyed [i.e. that which is temporal] is not equal. And that which is being discarded thus seems momentary [literally: as a hair's breadth]. For one loses neither the past nor the future. For how could anyone take away from a man what he does not possess?"

Notes:
This quotation from Marcus Aurelius (Antoninus), Meditations 2.14.1-2, does not illustrate the transmitted headword a)ke/raion (cf. alpha 834), used by him only at 6.30.1 in a list of adjectives for simple goodness, but a)kariai=os, 'of a hair's breadth', commonly used in the sense 'momentary' (see generally alpha 804), and used by him elsewhere: 2.6.1, 3.10.1, 4.48.2, 5.24.1, 6.25.1, 11.18.3 (see alpha 803). The headword is therefore certainly an error at some point of the tradition for the latter and should be corrected.
For the Stoic view here expressed, compare the Christian view that the experiences of a human lifetime are separate from the eternal present of eternal life and are "but for a moment" (parau/tika, 2 Corinthians 4.17).
