Translation:
The most dreadful of his generation is called 'Argas'. Demosthenes is likened to him by Aeschines.[1] But others [use it of] a person who behaves most terribly and bestially.
And in particular Argives used to call the snake an 'argas'. But Timarchos of Rhodes says this name is not used for linguistic reasons but because an 'argas' is a type of snake.[2]

Notes:
Adapted and abbreviated from Harpokration s.v. (alpha221 Keaney). Unusually, Photius s.v. (Lexicon alpha2771 Theodoridis) stems from a different tradition: there Argas is 'a bad poet with regard to composition', mentioned by Phaenias in his Against the Sophists.
[1] Aeschines 2.99 (web address 1). Aeschines says that this is one of the pejorative nicknames given to Demosthenes in his youth. The meaning of it is unknown unless the subsequent information in the entry is actually pertinent.
