Headword: Ὑπόχαλκον δέ σου τὸ χρυσίον
Adler number: upsilon,636
Translated headword: your gold (is) copper-looking
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning mixed; the currency [is] counterfeit, debased.
Greek Original:
Ὑπόχαλκον δέ σου τὸ χρυσίον: ἀντὶ τοῦ μίξιμον, παρακεκομμένον τὸ νόμισμα, παραχαράξιμον.
Notes:
LSJ s.v. ὑπόχαλκος tentatively suggest that the headword phrase might be a fragment of comedy; and Adler notes Bernhardy's opinion that it is an imperfectly transmitted line of iambic verse. However, its only secure attestation is in Christian literature: Basil of Caesarea, Homilies on the Psalms PG 29.269 = John of Damascus, Sacra parallela PG 95.1369. See Theodoridis' Photius edition, vol.II pp.LXXV-LXXVI.
