A musical note/string,[1] producing a deep/heavy sound.[2]
"When he slipped into the ultimate sickness, and an inevitable end, he saw something visible to his excellence; and he stuck his sword in his innards".[3]

*(upa/th: xordh\ mousikh/, baru\n fqo/ggon a)potelou=sa. nou=son o(/t' e)s u(pa/thn w)li/sqane, te/rma t' a)/fukton, ei)=den a)ristei/hn e)mfane\s ei)s i)di/hn: ph=ce d' u(po\ spla/gxnoisin e(o\n e)/gxos.
Notes:
[1] cf. ps.-Herodian 140, ps.-Zonaras 1770.
[2] The headword itself and the gloss given to it here sound incompatible but are not. See LSJ s.v. ('the highest of the three strings ... but the lowest in pitch') and esp. M.L. West, Ancient Greek Music (Oxford 1992) 64, with 219-220.
[3] An approximation of Greek Anthology 7.233.3-5 (Apollonides), rather than die of sickness, a military leader commits suicide; cf. Gow and Page, vol. I (138-139) and vol. II (158). Gow and Page note (vol. I, 139) that here the Anthologia Palatina (AP) transmits neu=son ("beckoning", "nodding"). However, along with the Anthologia Planudea and the Suda, they follow (ibid.) an emendation given by the AP scribe designated C (the Corrector) in reading nou=son ("illness").
