Headword: Θεατροκρασία
Adler number: theta,90
Translated headword: spectator-rule
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] mob-rule.
Greek Original:
Θεατροκρασία: ὀχλοκρασία.
Note:
Same entry in Photius and elsewhere. The headword, variously spelled as either θεατροκρασία or θεατροκορασία by the lexicographers, is presumably a version of Plato's coinage θεατροκρατία (Plato, Laws 701A [web address 1], noted by Pollux 4.121): in the "democratic" Athens of his day, he laments, audiences think they can judge what is good in music -- and, by extension, politics.
