Headword: Θεατρίζω
Adler number: theta,88
Translated headword: I bring onto stage, I make a spectacle of
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Used] with an accusative.[1]
Also [sc. attested is the compound] 'they are making a spectacle out of', [meaning] they are putting to the test. Polybius [writes]: "most men do not try to imitate the achievements of the fortunate, but by striving for the inessentials they make a spectacle out of their own lack of judgment."[2]
And elsewhere: "not only did they make a spectacle out of themselves, but they also brought catastrophe to Greece."[3]
Notes:
The unglossed headword also appears, according to Adler, in the Ambrosian Lexicon (214).
[1] Also in the Syntacticum Laurentianum.
