[1] A garbling of Greek Anthology 6.46.3-4 (Antipater of Sidon): Pherenikos is offering his trumpet to Athena, now that he has done with war and sacrifice-places; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 12) and (vol. II, 35-36). Although conceding that it may nonetheless be a genuine dedication, Gow and Page note that (vol. II, 35) the dedicator's name ("brings victory to bear") might simply be too appropriate in juxtaposition with the consequent, ironic text. They speculate instead that the epigram could be an epideictic exercise on the part of the epigrammatist (ibid.).
