On this epigram, in which the Roman military commander Aelius commits suicide rather than perish from disease, see Gow and Page (vol. I, 318-319) and (vol. II, 349). As Gow and Page note (vol. I, 318), here the Suda follows the Anthologia Palatina and the Anthologia Planudea in transmitting *)/argous pro/mos ("chieftain of Argos [Myth, Place]"). However, they find it most implausible (vol. II, 349) that a Roman officer of this period could have come from Argos (cf. alpha 3766); they instead adopt Brodaeus's (Jean Brodeau, 1500-1563) emendation in reading *)/areos pro/mos ("Ares's chieftain", i.e., a "leader in war"); cf. Paton (132-133).
