Headword: Θηρατεύεσθαι
Adler number: theta,347
Translated headword: to hunt (?), to pursue (?)
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to be delayed.[1]
Also [sc. attested is the phrase] 'hunter of speeches', meaning devotee [of them].[2]
Greek Original:
Θηρατεύεσθαι: ἀναβάλλεσθαι. καὶ Θηρατὴς λόγων, ἀντὶ τοῦ ἐπιθυμητής.
Notes:
[1] Likewise in ps.-Zonaras. This present middle/passive infinitive is here transmitted as θηρατεύεσθαι , otherwise unattested, and ignored in LSJ. Photius, Lexicon theta164 Theodoridis has it as θηραστεύεσθαι (obelized), Hesychius theta130 as θαστρεύεσθαι , which nineteenth-century scholars identified as a corruption of δηθὰ στρεύγεσθαι ('to be utterly worn out') in Homer, Iliad 15.512.
[2] From the scholia to Aristophanes, Clouds 358, where the phrase θηρατὰ λόγων occurs. See also theta 346.
