Headword: *to\ *(hsio/deion gh=ras
Adler number: tau,732
Translated headword: Hesiodic old age
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. A proverbial phrase] in reference to the extremely old; for something of the following kind is transmitted as an epigram of Pindar: "farewell Hesiod, twice a youth and twice met the grave,[1] you who had the measure of wisdom for mankind."
Greek Original:
*to\ *(hsio/deion gh=ras: e)pi\ tw=n u(pergh/rwn: fe/retai ga\r kai\ e)pi/gramma *pinda/rou toiou=ton: xai=re di\s h(bh/sas kai\ di\s ta/fwn a)ntibolh/sas, *(hsi/od', a)nqrw/pois me/tron e)/xwn sofi/hs.
Notes:
cf. (e.g.) Appendix Proverbiorum 4.92, which does not have the quotation but does cite Aristotle's Constitution of the Orchomenians (fr. 565 Rose) as the source of the epigram. See also Arsenius 18.12b.
For Hesiod see generally eta 583; for Pindar (to whom the epigram is not attributed by modern scholars), pi 1617.
[1] Genitive plural ta/fwn is transmitted here, but it does not scan; the paroemiographers have singular ta/fou, which does.
