Adler number: tau,61
Translated headword: serves as treasurer
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] manages, conceals, guards.[1]
"And [note] that it is [characteristic] of prudent persons, when they succeed in finding favor, to store up their fortune; but when they come into poor and mean [fortunes], to endure nothing ignoble."[2]
Greek Original:
*tamieu/etai: dioikei=tai, a)pokru/ptei, fula/ttei. kai\ o(/ti swfro/nwn e)sti\n a)nqrw/pwn, o(/tan me\n eu)dokei=n pra/ttwsi, tamieu/esqai ta\s tu/xas: o(/tan d' ei)s tapeina\s kai\ fau/las e)/lqwsi, mhqe\n u(pome/nein a)genne/s.
Notes:
[1] Likewise or similarly in other lexica; references at Photius tau38 Theodoridis. The headword is present indicative middle (rather than passive, as the glossing shows), third person singular, of tamieu/w (cf. tau 62, tau 63). Theodoridis is inclined to follow Naber in thinking it quoted from Proverbs 29.11 LXX.
[2] Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Roman Antiquities 8.48.4 (but instead of the Suda's eu)dokei=n pra/ttwsi, the text has eu)= pra/ttein dokw=si "they seem to be well off").
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; economics; ethics; historiography; imagery; religion
