Headword: *suni/hmi
Adler number: sigma,1576
Translated headword: I understand
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Used] with a genitive: "You would have said that he understood the clothes of the master."[1] But [also used] with an accusative: "you did not understand the bond of a Pleiad or [open] the fence of Orion [Author, Myth]."[2]
Greek Original:
*suni/hmi: genikh=|. ei)=pes a)\n au)to\n tw=n tou= despo/tou sunie/nai i(mati/wn. ai)tiatikh=| de/: ou) sunh=kas desmo\n *pleia/dos h)\ fragmo\n *)wri/wnos.
Notes:
Similarly in syntactical lexica; see further, next note. For the verb, see also e.g. sigma 1577.
[1] Adler tentatively attributes this quotation to Cassius Dio (because this seems to be what the Syntacticum Laurentianum warrants). In any event, to understand 'clothes' does not sound right; Bernhardy attractively proposed 'words', i.e. r(hmati/wn rather than i(mati/wn.
[2] Job 38.31 LXX (where the verse is a question, "Did you understand ...?").
