Headword: Ῥᾷον
Adler number: rho,40
Translated headword: easier, more easy, rather easy
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning something] simple, content.[1]
And [there is] a proverb: 'More easily than the Boeotians went over Oreion' [This is said] in reference to those who go over boundaries [horoi] and moderation; for Oreion is a mountain, the one by which the boundaries of the Boeotians are defined.[2]
Greek Original:
Ῥᾷον: εὐχερές, εὔκολον. καὶ παροιμία: Ῥᾷον ἢ τὸ Ὄρειον ὑπερέβησαν οἱ Βοιωτοί. ἐπὶ τῶν τοὺς ὅρους καὶ τὸ μέτρον ὑπερβαινόντων: Ὄρειον γάρ ἐστιν ὄρος, τὸ πρὸς ὃ οἱ ὅροι τῶν Βοιωτῶν ὡρίζοντο.
Notes:
[1] Likewise or very similarly in other lexica; references at Photius rho41 Theodoridis. The headword (which must be quoted from somewhere) is a comparative adjective (in the neuter) or adverb; cf. rho 41, rho 42, rho 43, rho 44, rho 52, rho 109, rho 127.
[2] Also in some of the paroemiographers, but with problems there. The version in Appendix Proverbiorum 4.64 twice has the toponym as Oneion, which seems to destroy the wordplay; in any case, Mt Oneion is south of Corinth, a long way from Boeotia. Apostolius 15.18 has the same word as the Suda -- but not, seemingly, as a toponym.
