Vetting Status: high

Greek Original:
*para/shmos: a)do/kimos. kai\ *para/shmon, to\ seshmasme/non, kai\ u(/popton. kai\ para/shmon h)=n to\ lego/menon kai\ fugh\n e)do/kei dhlou=n.
Notes:
The headword is the masculine nominative singular form of the adjective. It is perhaps extracted from Demosthenes (cf. pi 431) but more probably from Euripides, Hippolytus 1115, where the gloss of the scholia is the same as the present gloss.
See also pi 358.
[1] = Synagoge, Photius pi294.
[2] Theophylact Simocatta, Histories 2.15.8; cf. de Boor (100) and Whitby (64). During Comentiolus's campaign against the Avars in the spring of 587, a draft animal lost its load. The shouts of the animal's owner were mistaken by the marching soldiers as a command for them to turn and retreat, causing a panic; cf. Histories 2.15.7. On Comentiolus, see kappa 1990 generally. On the Avars, see generally alpha 18 note.
