The headword, which must be quoted from somewhere, is a transliteration (in the genitive singular) of Latin papilio, also spelled papuliw/n and papulew/n. Byzantine historians use the word.
The basic meaning of papilio is "butterfly," and it was applied to tents from their resemblance to a butterfly's wings; English "pavilion" is a derivative.
