Headword: *probiba/santes
Adler number: pi,2339
Translated headword: having led forward
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning they] having (?)begun first.
Greek Original:
*probiba/santes: proa/rcantes.
Note:
The headword is aorist active participle, masculine nominative plural, of probiba/zw (cf. pi 2338). Same or similar entry in Photius pi1188 Theodoridis and other lexica, except that some read proa/cantes for the gloss, i.e. an anomalous aorist participle of proa/gw, apparently, rather than of proa/rxw. (Theodoridis regards proa/cantes as correct.) Hesychius pi3346 has the participle probiba/santa (masculine accusative singular or neuter nominative/accusative plural; either way, not otherwise attested) glossed with proa/canta. The nominative plural is attested in Athanasius and elsewhere.
Keywords: Christianity; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; imagery; religion
