An 'upright' phalanx is the term used when it marches in column/file, having a depth many times larger than the length.[1] In general 'extended' is the term for every arrangement which has a length larger than the depth, but 'upright' for when the depth [is larger] than the length.

Ὀρθία: ὀρθία λέγεται φάλαγξ, ὅταν ἐπὶ κέρας πορεύηται, πολλαπλάσιον ἔχουσα τὸ βάθος τοῦ μήκους. καθόλου μὲν παράμηκες λέγεται πᾶν τάγμα, ὃ ἂν τὸ μῆκος ἔχῃ πλέον τοῦ βάθους, ὄρθιον δὲ ὃ ἂν τὸ βάθος τοῦ μήκους.
