Translation:
[sc. Descriptive of] the crab.[1]
"Backwards-walking, neckless, eight-footed swimmer."[2]
Greek Original:
Ὀπισθοβάμων: ὁ πάγουρος. ὀπισθοβάμονα, τρίχηλον, ὀκτάπουν νηκτάν.
Notes:
[1] The epithet "eight-footed", ὀκτάπους or ὀκτώπους , is applied to various animals: the crab (as here), the scorpion (as at omicron 130), and the octopus (Alexander Trallianus 7.1).
[2] Greek Anthology 6.196.2-3 (Statyllius Flaccus), reading ἀτράχηλον "neckless" instead of the Suda's τρίχηλον . For another extract from this epigram, the dedication of a crab to Pan, see rho 72; cf. Gow and Page, vol. I (422-423) and vol. II (452).
