On no discernible basis, Adler initially pointed to Callimachus as the origin of the phrase, but in her consolidated addenda and corrigenda she changed her mind (prompted by Erich Diehl): see Plato, Critias 112A (cited by LSJ); and subsequently in the paroemiographers.
