Μάκελλα: δίκελλα. Ἀριστοφάνης: ὦ μῶρε, μῶρε, μὴ θεῶν κίνει φρένας δειλάς, ὅπως μή σου γένος πανώλεθρον Διὸς μακέλλῃ πᾶν ἀναστρέψῃ δίκη. ἐπὶ τῶν βλασφήμων εἴρηται.

[2] Aristophanes, Birds 1238-40 (here misquoted: 'cowardly', δειλάς , should be 'terrible', δεινάς ), with scholion. Dunbar 625 adduces tragedic precedents (Aeschylus, Agamemnon 525-6; Sophocles fr.727) for the phrase and concept of 'Zeus's mattock'. Again at mu 1338.
