Adler number: mu,380
Translated headword: [more than] lordly wealth
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Pindar [sc. says this].[1] ['Lordly' meaning] strong, powerful, giving of manliness; since gold is very powerful. For it is said to be the sinews of war, as Pindar says.[2]
Notes:
Likewise or similarly in other lexica (see the references at Photius mu171 Theodoridis), and see n. 2 below.
[1] Pindar, Olympian 1.1-2 (web address 1), μεγάνορος ἔξοχα πλούτου ["beyond lordly wealth"], describing the pre-eminence of gold.
[2] "Gold/wealth is the sinews of war" is proverbial, and not otherwise attributed to Pindar. The saying is quoted in the Pindar scholia to Olympian 1.4b, Appian (Civil War 4.12.99), Plutarch (Agis and Cleomenes 48.1.1), and nu 266, which quotes George of Pisidia (the seventh-century AD Byzantine poet), Heraclias 1.163-4. George's lines contain the phrase νεῦρα τῆς μάχης ["sinews of battle"] with reference to wealth; "Pindar" in the present entry is thus surely an error for Pisides.
