Headword: *maieuo/menoi
Adler number: mu,317
Translated headword: delivering, serving as a midwife (?)
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning they] seeking, searching out.
Greek Original:
*maieuo/menoi: zhtou=ntes, e)reunw=ntes.
Note:
The headword as transmitted is present participle, masculine nominative plural, of maieu/omai (cf. mu 315 etc.), here used figuratively. As such it would be quoted from somewhere, and the only extant instance outside lexicography is ps.-Dionysius the Areopagite, Ecclesiastical Hierarchy 85.9 Heil-Ritter. Note, however, that at Photius, Lexicon mu27 Theodoridis, the editor (following H. Stephanus and Naber) plausibly corrects the headword to maio/menoi, twice attested in Pindar; also in e.g. Hesiod and Oppian.
