Headword: Μαιευόμενοι
Adler number: mu,317
Translated headword: delivering, serving as a midwife (?)
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning they] seeking, searching out.
Greek Original:
Μαιευόμενοι: ζητοῦντες, ἐρευνῶντες.
The headword as transmitted is present participle, masculine nominative plural, of μαιεύομαι (cf. mu 315 etc.), here used figuratively. As such it would be quoted from somewhere, and the only extant instance outside lexicography is ps.-Dionysius the Areopagite, Ecclesiastical Hierarchy 85.9 Heil-Ritter. Note, however, that at Photius, Lexicon mu27 Theodoridis, the editor (following H. Stephanus and Naber) plausibly corrects the headword to μαιόμενοι , twice attested in Pindar; also in e.g. Hesiod and Oppian.
