Headword: *mua=tai
Adler number: mu,1366
Translated headword: grimace
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] wink.
Greek Original:
*mua=tai: skardamu/ttetai.
Note:
As Kuster first realised, both the transmitted headword and the transmitted gloss are in all probability homophonous misspellings of mua=te (cf. mu 1367) and skardamu/ttete respectively, taken over from Photius' Lexicon by the Suda. *mua=te (second person plural, present active indicative) appears in Aristophanes, Lysistrata 126 (web address 1), and is glossed in scholia as well as in Hesychius mu1771 and (after correction) Photius mu563 Theodoridis with the corresponding form skardamu/ttete. The headword and gloss as they stand appear to be third person singular, indicative middle/passive, a form that is not otherwise attested for either word.
