A degenerate woman they used to call 'hated', not from the [noun] mi=sos ["hatred"] but from the [verb] mi/sgesqai ["to mingle"]; for mi=sos is different[1] from miai/nesqai ["to be defiled"]; for what is hated is isolated and is unmingled; but [someone is called 'hated'] inasmuch as she is a sort of mingler. Which [etymology?] is even better. And what is said by way of a proverb, "hated [is] a woman thick about the ankle",[2] seems to be said in accordance with this. And Cratinus said the following somewhere: "hated women use dildoes."[3] But [Cratinus] calls the [man] who is simply hated 'feckless'.[4] But metaphorically the expression is also applied to the greedy man, as a figure of speech.
