Headword: Λύγδινα
Adler number: lambda,768
Translated headword: marble-white
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"And on [sc. her] chest still those marble-white cones of [her] breasts stood up, stripped of an encircling girdle." In the Epigrams.[1] And elsewhere: "as if carved of white marble, laden with maidenly delights".[2]
White marble is a kind of stone.
And elsewhere: "a certain man was trying to sell a Hermes, having carved it of white marble".[3]
Notes:
The unglossed headword, presumably extracted from the first quotation given, is an adjective in the neuter nominative/accusative plural.
[1] Greek Anthology 5.12.3-4 (Philodemus). The passage is also quoted under kappa 2277 through ἕστηκε . Note that the transmitted περιτρομάδος in the present entry is probably incorrect; περιδρομάδος (as in Paton, Waltz) is the correct reading. However, the lexicographer was probably correct to write μίτρης , thus providing a preferable alternative to the direct tradition's μήτρης (see the apparatus criticus in Waltz p.26).
[2] Greek Anthology 5.194.3-4 (Poseidippus or Asclepiades). The passage is describing a girl named Eirenios. This quotation does not use the headword, but rather the noun from which it is derived.
[3] Babrius, Fables 30.1.
