Headword: Λοιμεύεται
Adler number: lambda,756
Translated headword: is pestilent
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] is creating ruin, is harming.
Also [sc. attested is the related noun] λοιμός , [meaning] a ruin-creating disease.
"A bad atmospheric mixture and a pestilential turn in the weather is called a katastasis".[1]
Greek Original:
Λοιμεύεται: φθοροποιεῖ, βλάπτει. καὶ Λοιμός, ἡ φθοροποιὸς νόσος. δυσκρασία ἀέρος καὶ τροπὴ λοιμικὴ κατάστασις λέγεται.
Notes:
Same or similar entry elsewhere: see the references at Photius lambda390 Theodoridis. The headword is third person singular, present indicative, of the rare verb λοιμεύομαι . It would seem to be quoted from somewhere, but more probably it is mis-quoted from Proverbs 19.19 LXX, which has the corresponding subjunctive, λοιμεύηται ; cf. Hesychius s.v.
[1] Tentatively attributed by Adler to an ancient Life of Pythagoras. For 'bad mixture' cf. under nu 495. For the term katastasis see kappa 788 -- but for the sense of it used here, see LSJ s.v., II.2.
