Headword: Λεαίνω
Adler number: lambda,227
Translated headword: I smooth
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
['I smooth'] and 'having smoothed' [Attic] and 'having smoothed' [epic];[1] [this verb is used] with an accusative.
Greek Original:
Λεαίνω καὶ Λεάνας καὶ Λεῄνας: αἰτιατικῇ.
Notes:
Mss AFV, Adler reports, contain only the two participles, not the primary headword λεαίνω or "with an accusative." See also lambda 211, lambda 355.
The verb is also listed as taking the accusative in the Laurentian Syntactic Lexicon (see bibliography).
[1] The iota subscript in λεῄνας is a Byzantine hypercorrection (preserving the iota of λεαίνω ); properly the epic/Ionic form is λεήνας , which occurs in a figurative sense in Herodotus 8.142.4 (of King Alexander I of Macedon, in the view of the Spartans, toning down Mardonius' speech); see also Nicander, Alexipharmaca 201, 624.
