Notes:
[1] The headword (presumably extracted from the quotation given) is intransitive aorist participle, masculine nominative plural, of katecani/sthmi; cf. kappa 956.
[2] Polybius fr. 172 Büttner-Wobst (from the Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti). Büttner-Wobst notes (537) that Valesius (Henri de Valois 1603-1676) attributed this fragment to Polybius. Inasmuch as no forms of the verb katecani/stamai (I rise up against, am on my guard against; cf. LSJ s.v., web address 1) occur elsewhere in Polybius, both Schweighäuser and Dindorf maintained doubts about the attribution (ibid.). Schweighäuser conceded (Walbank, 753), nonetheless, that if the fragment was in fact Polybian, then it might correlate with the attack by Philip V on Thasos (a city and its namesake island in the north Aegean Sea, Barrington Atlas map 51 grid D3; cf. theta 60) in 202 BCE. Walbank points out, however, that pruta/neis (presidents) are not known from Thasos; the fragment is more likely associated with Philip's 203-202 BCE attack (Polybius 15.22-23, web address 2) on Kios (Cius; cf. kappa 1658, kappa 1476, and kappa 1571), which did have a prytanean council tradition (ibid.)
