[Meaning] to be about to squander [on], to be about to prolong.[1] "For he decided not to leave the war in Etruria[2] unfinished and take trouble over the cities there, fearing that he would be about to consume all the time of his authority -- which was not long -- being occupied with lesser deeds."[3]
Greek Original:

Notes:
[1] The headword is future active infinitive of katatri/bw (literally "I rub down"), evidently quoted from somewhere (other than the quotation given here, which has the future optative); perhaps Cassius Dio 60.19.5.
[2] Ancient Etruria, also known as Tyrrhenia, occupies the central-western region of the Italian peninsula, north of Latium and south of Liguria; cf. tau 837, tau 1195, and Barrington Atlas map 42 grids B1-3).
[3] Polybius fr. 171 Büttner-Wobst (context and individual unknown). Büttner-Wobst notes (536) that this fragment was attributed to Polybius by Valesius (Henri de Valois 1603-1676). Schweighäuser, arguing that Polybius usually employs the particle mh/ after a verb of fearing only if that verb is in the optative or subjunctive mood, remained doubtful about the attribution (ibid.); indeed, in this fragment mh\ follows the perfect participle dedoiko/ti, without the particle a)/n, whose presence would represent an optative mood (Smyth, §§1845-1849, 411-412). Defending the attribution, however, Büttner-Wobst cites (op. cit., 536) two indisputably Polybian passages where the negative mh/ particle follows participles derived from verbs of fearing, concern, or worry, without an accompanying a)/n particle; cf. Polybius 4.71.6 (web address 1) and 5.20.3 (web address 2).
