Headword: Καταπροί̈ξεται
Adler number: kappa,731
Translated headword: will escape unpunished
Vetting Status: high
The [prefix] πρό ["before"] [is used] instead of παρά ["beside"].
To arrive before [προϊκνεῖσθαι ] [sc. is another instance of this].
Some [sc. say it comes] from ἵξεσθαι ,[1] which is to take some gift.
Archilochus [writes]: "that man will not come off well."[2]
But Herodian in the Epimerismoi says [it comes] from ἴσσω .[3]
And Archilochus [writes]: "I stretch out a hand and I beg a gift."[4]
From a gloss on Herodotus 3.156.3 (where the headword appears, in a phrase quoted at the end of kappa 730), also in Etymologicum Magnum 689.1, partly from Orion [Author, Myth] 133.24; cf. a scholion on Homer, Odyssey 17.352.
Besides kappa 730, cf. also (for this verb) kappa 732.
[1] The infinitive ἵξεσθαι is future of ἱκνέομαι "I arrive". According to LSJ s.v., the most likely etymology of καταπροίξομαι is from κατα - προ - ἱκνέομαι , not from προίξ , προῖκα (as suggested at kappa 730).
[2] Archilochus fr. 200 West (which should read, before the verb, ἐμέο δὲ κεῖνος ).
[3] Herodian the grammarian I p. XXXII Lentz. The alleged verb ἴσσω probably comes from a mis-division of προίσσομαι .
[4] Archilochus fr. 296 West. This verb προίσσομαι is apparently derived from the noun προίξ (pi 2983).
