Vetting Status: high

[Meaning] to ravage.[1]
"The Gepids, since the opportunity of war had not yet come to pass, persuaded them to attack, meanwhile, the territory of the Romans, having created the plot against the Romans as a byproduct of their own lack of opportunity."[2]
Greek Original:
Katatheein: katatrechein. hoi de Gêpaides, epei oupô ho tês machês eneistêkei kairos, peithousin autous katathein metaxu tên tôn Rhômaiôn chôran, parergon tês spheteras akairias pepoiêmenoi tên es Rhômaious epiboulên.
Notes:
[1] Same glossing in other lexica (and cf. kappa 554). The uncontracted headword kataqe/ein is presumably quoted from somewhere; perhaps Procopius, Secret History 11.6; in any event, seemingly not the quotation given here, which has kataqei=n. The verb also appears at kappa 550 and kappa 551.
[2] Procopius, History of the Wars of Justinian 8.18.16. For the Gepids cf. gamma 243.
