Κρωβύλος: ὁ μαλλὸς τῶν παιδίων. καὶ ὁ πλόκαμος, ὃν διέβαλλον οἱ τὸν χρυσοῦν τέττιγα φοροῦντες, ἀνάδημα, κόσμος, ὁ τῶν τριχῶν πεπλεγμένος κόσμος. ἐν Ἐπιγράμμασι: ἅλικες αἵ τε κόμαι καὶ ὁ κρωβύλος, ἃς ἀπὸ Φοίβῳ πέξατο μολπαστᾷ κῶμος ὁ τετραέτης. Ξενοφῶν: εἶχον δὲ κράνη σκύτινα οἷά περ τὰ Παφλαγονικά, κρωβύλον ἔχοντα κατὰ μέσον, ἐγγυτάτω τιαροειδῆ. Κρωβύλος κυρίως εἶδος ἐμπλοκῆς ἐστι κατὰ Θουκυδίδην.

[2] A misunderstanding of Thucydides 1.6.3 (web address 1), where the golden cicada is a pin used to fasten the top-knot; both pin and top-knot are part of what Thucydides describes as an old-fashioned style of personal adornment. Contrast epsilon 1257.
