Headword: Κομᾷ
Adler number: kappa,1980
Translated headword: lets the hair grow long
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] bears oneself proudly, is high-minded, is crowned, is putting out young shoots, is adorned with an excess of hair.[1]
Or [meaning] boasts at length of an abundance of valuables.[2] "Do not begrudge [sc. us] for our long hair."[3] Meaning by living luxuriously, by being wealthy. For they used to say letting the hair grow long for living luxuriously, bearing oneself proudly, and being high-minded. Especially letting the hair of the head grow long.[4]
Notes:
The headword -- the present indicative (and subjunctive), third person singular, of the contracted verb κομάω (see LSJ s.v.) -- literally means I let the hair grow long, but there are metaphorical usages, which the Suda covers here. See also kappa 1995.
[1] To this point the entry is the same as Synagoge kappa392, except that the latter glosses μεγαλοφρονεῖ ; cf. Photius, Lexicon kappa912 Theodoridis, Lexica Segueriana 280.23, Hesychius s.v. κομᾷ , and the scholia to Aristophanes, Wasps 1317, where κομᾷς occurs (web address 1).
[2] This seems to be paraphrased (so Adler) from the scholia to Aristophanes, Plutus [Wealth] 170, where the headword occurs (web address 2).
[3] Aristophanes, Knights 580 (web address 3): the chorus leader asks this favor should peace come from the knights' service in battle; cf. delta 572.
[4] The remainder of the entry is quoted from the scholia to Aristophanes, Knights 580 (cf. n.3).
