Adler number: kappa,1944
Translated headword: roller
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] a silent wave, not splashing against anything. "Pushing forth a roller and agitating and stirring [the sea]". Aristophanes [sc. says this].
Greek Original:
Κολόκυμα: τὸ κωφὸν κῦμα καὶ μὴ ἐπικαχλάζον. ὠθῶν κολόκυμα καὶ ταράττων καὶ κυκῶν. Ἀριστοφάνης.
Notes:
Aristophanes, Knights 692, referring metaphorically to Kleon (kappa 1731), with scholion.
Same entry in Pausanias the Atticist kappa37 and Photius kappa887 Theodoridis. Hesychius kappa3368 refers instead to a "blind" wave, and the scholiast ad loc. refers to a "maimed" κολοβόν wave, "which they call 'blind' because it does not splash". The scholiast adds: "or, rolling and threatening. A high and large wave, rolling after it has been brought to a head. And this is with regard to the wind." The scholia vetera to Homer, Iliad 13.472 suppose that κόλον in κολοσυρτόν and κολόκυμα means "large".
