Adler number: kappa,1939
Translated headword: Kolias
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A coastal promontory of Attica; named from a metaphor of the kolon. And there is a shrine of Aphrodite Kolias there.
Greek Original:
Κολιάς: ἐπιθαλασσία ἄκρα τῆς Ἀττικῆς: ἐκ μεταφορᾶς τοῦ κόλου ὠνομασμένη. καὶ ἔστιν αὐτόθι Ἀφροδίτης ἱερὸν Κωλιάδος.
Notes:
See also kappa 2239 and kappa 2240, both with the more authentic Κω- spelling which spoils the etymology proffered here.
The present entry in fact follows (and abridges) Harpokration s.v. Κωλιάς (generated by the appearance of the name in [Demosthenes] 59.33-34), but it turns two of the relevant three omegas into omicrons.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; geography; imagery; religion; rhetoric
