Headword: Κιγηλός
Adler number: kappa,1579
Translated headword: kigelos
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] a beggar. From a certain sea-bird so called. It is a weak animal, so that it does not even make its own dwelling-place, but gives birth in those of others. And it moves the feathers of its tail.
Note:
cf. Aelian, History of animals 12.9 (about the κίγκλος ; cf. kappa 1585, and see also kappa 1580). The headword, attested only here, could have originated as a misreading of κίγκλος . Aelian says that country people's proverbs call beggars κίγκλοι .
