Also [sc. attested is the related participle] καχεκτοῦντες ["they being in ill health"], [meaning] they managing their condition (ἕξις ) badly (κακῶς ),[1] they being sick. Polybius [writes]: "the courage of Perseus was exhausted by toil and time, just like that of athletes in ill-health. For when the danger approached, and it was his duty to fight a decisive battle, his courage broke down."[2]

Καχεξία. καὶ Καχεκτοῦντες, κακῶς τὴν ἕξιν διατεθειμένοι, ἀσθενοῦντες. Πολύβιος: ὁ δὲ Περσεὺς προσαγόμενος τὸν χρόνον καὶ τὸν πόνον ἐξελύετο τῇ ψυχῇ, καθάπερ οἱ καχεκτοῦντες τῶν ἀθλητῶν: ὅτε γὰρ τὸ δεινὸν ἐγγίζοι καὶ δέοι κρίνεσθαι περὶ τῶν ὅλων, οὐχ ὑπέμεινε τῇ ψυχῇ.
